The Blue and the Black
The Blue and the Black includes 33 essays by Sabahattin Eyüboğlu. As Hughette Bouffard Eyüboğlu puts it in Notes on the Translation, ”While reading these essays, you will follow the course pursued by Sabahattin Eyüboğlu as an intellectual, a writer and an educator who believed in sharing his experiences. He was convinced that artists were the true spokesmen for humans. This is the reason why he named his book The Blue and the Black. To him, Blue represents art and Black stands for money. Every color has its own flavor and depth, but for him blue was different. Darkness is conquered by blue, not by the sun! Even when the sun has withdrawn and has disappeared, blue and darkness struggle for life until morning. Blue is also the color of the loveliest nights. The only color capable of countering the effects of the black of shame, the black of death and of gloom, a black piercing you to the bone marrow, is blue. Art in itself is blue.”
